Outdoors Are Fun!
Hello everyone! My name is Rebecca. In June I had the opportunity to accompany the ALE members on the ALE Outdoor Camp seminar. It was so wonderful meeting everyone and participating in the Seminar together! I really enjoyed the scenery of Niigata where the seminar was held. The beautiful forests and lakes reminded me a lot of Oregon near Mt Hood, where my parents now live. Instead of rice fields in the surrounding areas we have fruit orchards. At the seminar we camped, cooked outdoors, went fly fishing and canoed! With such varied activities, we all did some things for the first time. I found that very exciting! I had never made soba before, so that was quite fun for me, although very difficult! I also like to try local foods and was delighted that we got to pick Udo leaves, that were growing at the campsite to put on the pizzas we cooked. They were quite delicious!

We also got to taste soba sake, as well as another local sake. We don’t make sake in Oregon, but we do have many local micro brewed beers. (Ji-biru) My favorites are raspberry and cherry beer, but the lemon beer is good too. If you ever visit Oregon, please try some. The fly fishing was quite fun I thought. Oregon lakes have "planted fish" in them like the one near our campsite, but usually we can "catch and keep" a limited number of fish over 20cm. Where we fished though, it was a "catch and release" lake, so the fish have a chance to grow bigger.
I have so many wonderful memories of the ALE members and the seminar! I hope I have the chance to participate again sometime!
