Mothers Day in the Spring
Let me introduce a British spring event called Mothering Sunday. Most of you know it as Mothers Day. In Britain, Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of another annual event called "Lent." Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in England since at least the 16th century. It has been a day for giving thanks for all our mothers do for us. About four hundred years ago, people who lived in small villages made a point of not going to their local church on Sunday, but to the nearest big church to what was called the mother church.

People who visited their mother church would say they had gone "mothering". Young boys and girls who worked away from home were only allowed one day off work a year to visit their family., this was usually "Mothering Sunday" . They would bring gifts such as cake, flowers and eggs to give their mother as a thank you for everything they had done for them. In recent times, England has taken the same character as the US Mothers Day. Most children give a card or gift as a thank you. England does not have a fixed date for Mothers Day as it depends on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This year Mothers Day is March 18th, but next year, March 2nd.
